Dr. Gundersen knew in high school that he wanted to be a doctor. Once in college, he started to realize if he wanted to be a “family man” and have somewhat normal working hours, Optometry sounded interesting and a way to have the best of both worlds. Dr. Gundersen graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in May 1979 and along with Dr. Ron Zuker (they became friends at I.C.O.), decided to go into practice together and bought Dr. Louis Jullie’s practice in Muskegon in August 1979. In 1980 , they started a new office in an old house in Shelby and began seeing patients there. In 1986 they purchased the practice of Dr. Wayne Gillan in Montague and started seeing patients there as well. In 2009, they moved the Montague practice to a larger more modern building in Whitehall. Dr. Gundersen and his wife of 40 years, Kate, have three children and four grandchildren. He enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, reading, golfing, and fishing.
